Hey Myself,
So I am applying for a gallery spot, that is fun. Coming up with an artist statement is too funny. Montreal is cold, the way I like it. Sometimes the cold becomes a vibe and it seeps deep down - don't like. But as for now I got a new camera so I will take lots of pictures of my sketch book and projects. There is this universe of some sort, beyond the paper, beyond our world. It is our job as artists to apply pressure to the veil that lays on top of it - dividing us from it. We must apply so much pressure that we break it, releasing this new form within our reality. Gentle strokes release delightful wafts of new form, and strong strokes attack and suffocate. All are experiences that can be delivered, yet very difficult to balance. A good artist, musician or painter, must tap into this side to allow a composition to exist beyond its own stated presents within our known reality.

Done. This is a drawing I did for Wes, a wonderful musician who lives in St. Marys. It is for his EP which holds some strong and beautiful songs. I can not wait to hear it. As for the summer, I have been using Loomis's book on figure drawing to try and master the human form based upon memory alone. More images to come.
Above: The boy with wings was suggested by Wes and there has been many attempts to incorporate the request. The font for the EP title" dear Elliott" connects with the boy.

Tonight, my usual ritual of tonic on cbc radio 2..paint..lemon water.... so nice. Even if I paint for even an hour I learn so much. Today I learned to treat paint like a pencil. Each stroke is a movement of shadow and highlight, each colour is meant to balance the other. I like noses.

I have returned. I think I have been having some issues with my mental health lately and I find blogging a great venting arena. I don't want to carry this negativity over into "real" life so hello internet. Anyway, I have been working on many projects and I will post them soon - once I am semi-pleased with them. Summer goal of art = almost satisfied.

Did I show this to you? It was basically an image that was handed to me in a dream...on a receipt actually. I started reconstructing the image and then realized that ... well, it is quite phallic (as Avyn pointed out lol). I liked the image though - sort of mystical and my own imaginative piece. I showed it in drawing class to "introduce" my self.... BAD idea. The teacher said that I seemed to have an interest in sex, possibly the psychology behind it? Hm..well I guess I will play that up in my next projects ( 4 of them....I will post those soon). Also, I started adding colour to the " Deep Space Project" and I will post that soon too. Exciting.

DEEP SPACE PROJECT

Oh wow, I am tired. Here is the canvas ( five foot 6 high canvas may I add) I have been working on for 20 hours. Not finished but I am so fucking happy that it is turning out. Is it sad that my proudest moment in my life is achieving the correct perspective on the vent located on the ceiling? Yes? WELL TOO BAD. * cough * anyways....So let me give you the run down on this. Run down? Is that even a phrase...WELL IT IS NOW. Anyways, so I built this canvas my self ( using saws, nails and shit....) took me a long time, stretched the raw canvas my self too...and have mad scars on my fingers from doing so. The objective is to create "deep space" and have the illusion that you could "walk into" the painting. Hope I did that. Still have to finish up the details and then she wants us to "hang something that represents you" in front of my face! And draw it...out of focus? It is pretty confusing but...I am glad I was forced to do this project because now I see the world as it is. I know that I don't want to be a "realism artist"...drawing puppy dogs in a basket or children eating corn dogs on top of a hilly landscape (that would be pretty cool though..). However, I think that by forcing your self to SEE the world...I will SEE what is in my mind. My imagination, my dreams...my...err..ya. By allowing my self to view ideas as they are, I hope to reproduce imaginative imagery on paper.

.....not much. Trying to figure out this new blogger crap AND I am working on lots of art. Okay. Lets start.
1/ This is my major project lately. It is not even close to being done but you get the idea. I mentioned in a post (scroll down) about the meaning and blah blah blah. It is for my mom. I got really mad at it ...and uninspired....and frustrated. Then I decided to spray a bunch of black paint at one of the faces. Then I realized that I need to be me, and not worry about technique. So now I am fine and emotionally stable.
2/ Hahahaha oh man. Okay, so I have been extremely inspired by " two spirited" natives..aka transsexual natives/cross dressers. I want to dedicate many pieces on the topic. This is an " it" ...man....woman? with woman body parts. You get it.
3/ No clue what this was about. Probably pissed off at something.
4/ Trying to make a cool advert. Slow process.

This is a very delayed post BUT for those who did not know I decided to be old fashioned and take the train home. For those Canadians, I used VIA rail - duh - and it was amazing. I did not expect it to be good. I had this image in my mind that I would be sitting next to a sausage smelling elderly he/she or possibly so bored that I would commit murder using small, bite sized dill weeded midgets ( ya, I don't know). But, in fact, it was so enjoyable. SO gypsy style. First, the employees were so nice; I had this " mini hotel" room to my self (see picture) where I had a key and could hit up the bar, listen to some live cello music and even dine. Gin and Tonic, some sketching supplies and a whole lot of black made this trip very mellowly surreal. Next time your traveling around Canada, take VIA rail. It may cost twice as much as a plane...and 6 times as long...but it slows our modern pace down and allows us to enjoy our travels, embrace the miles we gain and absorb the inspiring landscape floating by. I will be returning for certain.

Time to Think about The light Tip Toe

Today I was thinking about time. The intervals - or dimensions- of it. 24 hours to complete society molded tasks, to be something in accord with these restrictions...it is just so customary. I currently would like to rid my self of all time indicators and consume the forces of light to gage such an uncontrollable substance. Possibly, humanity needs to control it in order to keep a positive mental state - if one thinks to hard about the invincible passage of it one might dive into the current, completely absorbed in a welting emotion. Now, I can not explain this fully in words, or in my mind for that matter, but it seems that time can only bounce back into the present...and maybe ..just maybe...we are not involved with time at all. Deep in the rhythmical recapitulation of history. This is what my next piece will be exploring and I hope to express this idea further with the panel movement. How sublime. ( I know your saying "aw what a heave ho of horse baloney" but I am seriously so intrigued by the subject! Uh...Duchamp would be SO pissed.)

I want to incorporate more realism and CONCENTRATE on the task at hand; rather than using swirly bits to cover up lazy spells.

Grade Eight Glory

I found an old sketch book from grade eight. I often wondered what it would be like to meet an outer being self from my grade eight life. My thoughts were mine, my physical image was some one else. I wish I knew who I was back then...maybe a stronger person could have emerged from coiled, internal turmoil. I was too busy trying to follow. I will some day look back to my self currently and shake my head, however I am quite content with the clustered confidence I have strangely gained from university.

I have been accepted to Concordia's Fine Arts and Art History program! I am so excited to start, I have picked out most of my classes. Currently I am doing 3 Art History courses,( 20C Art/Architecture - one of my favorite units, Life of "TBA" , and Art History 200)Painting 200, ARTX 280 ( involves studio practive, installations, performances and relating art back to one's self), and FFRC which is a course every Fine Arts student has to take, mise well get it over with right? I was sad to find out Drawing 300 was FULL; I was exempted from Drawing 200 so I can not take that course. Rats, rats rats. Oh well, I am pretty pleased I actually got into Painting 200 as that course is filling up quickly. Can not wait to live in Montreal!

Pumpkin Seeds and Meeting Trees

Today I realized that summer is so near! I glanced outward on the golden fields, lit by the charm of a hydrogen ball. It made me smile, so much that I counted the days until I was home. 36, in case you were wondering. I also have many goals I would like to achieve, one: getting into Concordia University for Studio Arts and Art History. I wont find out until April, so I hope it is a YES. Secondly, my stomach just made this sound that was strangely similar to a Nintendo 64 game sound narrative. Third goal is to practice my realism! I need to draw people, volunteers? I need to learn the ways of reality and not distort them with my blasted imagination ( which is good some days, but frustrating to eliminate on the most part).

Above: The first one is this stupid still life we did. It sort of made me say " awwwweee' towards my teacher because he brought in a loaf of bread and sliced it, and added jam jars and the notorious pumpkin. It was so cute. But...annoying. I think my bread texture is okay but man oh man how I hate the pumpkins. The second one was this " texture' project, using an HB pencil I had to do little wee dots to create volume. It was an interesting technique, one that I hardly explore for the most part. The last one is funny, we had to copy a famous piece by an artist. My piece was a portrait of a woman and her boy. It was a nice scene, but I made their expressions horrified instead of seriously joyful because they are actually witnessing a murder ( well, not really, I made that up but the expression looks like they are!) Enjoy!

Whole Project

This is my " do what ever you want project". I think the overall theme of this is how I feel detached from society and I often stare blankly into an obis. The island on the right ( if you can identify it) is riding on a giant spider - obviously - and is " spidering" away from me - hahahaha. Plus there is an undertone of native land ownership and going back to the simplicity of it all ( used for an Aboriginal Fine Arts scholarship). I sort of hate the tones I used for the people, but I did this in about 6 hours flat because I was unaware of the due date ( emphasizing my la la attitude lately haha). If I could go back and change it I would probably add in more mask figures ( who are the elder spirits watching over the land). It almost distastefully screams Nicole...and it annoys me. I hope it doesn't for you though! Happy faces!

A Close Analyses of a Sissor

So, last week I was assigned the best project of life: do what ever you want. We had about an hour to plan out an idea using 'thumbnail sketches' and what not. I have many more ideas than this though. It is hard to explain in words, BUT I really enjoy Tibetan traditional wear and it will be incorporated in the piece: colour scheme, on the people and also animal hide hanging from the trees. There are little forest nymphs - Waterhouse inspired - ( I know, typical me...but I promise I will rearrange them to make it less predictable). The trees will connect together to make black and white stained glass windows, the back ground is a black void like Borromini's cathedral vaulting and signature - style - swelling "sand dunes" around the foreground. Huge dresses will turn into waterfalls and Elizabethan/caveman/wild-child hair will emerge in the rapids. It is in my mind.

Rant

Human life is all about arrangements. Art is the arrangement of line, texture, color and the organization of it all. My life has a series of arrangements such as a schedule, when and where to go and sleep ( damn this type of organization). Writing is the arrangement of letters on a page then arrangements of words following the arrangement of sequence. I think we are all capable to arrange and with this we can create unique imprints in this dust hole. Impacts. Movements. arrange!

Trevor Sims, a close friend (and pen pal) of mine has been a key inspiration for my quest to finding my true self through forms of art. He is a free lance artist living in Ontario currently and I did a wee little questionnaire for him to answer. 1) If you could re-name yourself what name would it be?

Tough... I would name myself Quetzacoatl after the winged Aztec serpent god. But I would just go by Q.

2) Squint your eyes right at this moment, what do you see?

I see little mischievous gnomes that fade to black

3) What inspires you and how do you gain this inspiration?

My friends inspire me a lot because they have set some great examples and their support has helped me become more ambitious. I find inspiration in nature and the outdoors. Its where I feel comfortable and relaxed. I listen to the energy glowing through the woods and I try to immortalize it before it passes through me.

4) General theme you find in your pieces?

A general theme I find in my pieces are eyes, and birds. I like to draw organic things, like plants and portraits, but I also enjoy creating abstract art so it depends on how I feel.

5) What relationship do you have with the sidewalk as you walk?

I have a generally good relationship with the sidewalk by sometimes it can be a bitch. I'm sure I'd be the same if everyone walked all over me.

His name was Donald and he was our model today. He was a lovely man who had great musical talent. The facial beard was nice because it helped with proportions and the floor length dread locks were a nice touch too. Now I am craving some.

The Pouted Child

I discoverd a free drawing clinic on Sundays and Fridays for three hours. I mustered up all of my courage to bring myself over to the fine arts building today. I was surrounded by cute, 60 year old local artists who were extreamly intense. One folk wore a hate made of a quilt. It was nice to be around such talent and it has inspired me greatly.

Stole my portfolio again. Today was interesting, we had to work with textures..drawing pumpkins, you know - the usual.

Above: ( From the top) Abstract picture of my mood. I was so tired that day, the assignment was to draw random lines the find an image within those lines ( my specialty). Following that, my teacher Mr. Hill in all of his glory. One folk in my class stealthily added a Mohawk to his portrait, made me giggle. Then there is the picture that one described as " looking at pumpkins on acid" - perfect. Uhgh, then there is the colour workshop we did. Next is just a bunch of my neck ornaments gathered, using texture again. Lastly, my favorite, is an abstracted impressionism piece which contrasts the original purpose - to be light, gleeful and jolly. I am a rebel, what can I say?

the greatest artist of all time
but after gazing into the piece " Garden of Earthly Delights"
this statement is evidently supported.
He has inspired me so much and the corrupted world
he projects continues

Above: Cats and pumpkins, my teacher hated how I added rabbit ears to the squash. The bottles were boring and this was my first sketch using charcoal ever in my life. Next is a nice " thanksgiving" scene consisting of baskets, flowers and you guessed it - pumpkins! Work boots following the gourd fetish; it reminds me of all the lovely pit festivities back in la village. Finally, Shakespeare's bust with books and pumpkins ( I decided to rid the still life of those blasted sphere forms ...I am quite the rebellion I must say). More to follow.

I found a nice piece of cardboard today, and I have been destroying it with my Bic Pens and charcoal (gifted to me by a someone* someone*). I will never know who this is in the drawing, but a scene is being pasted on the foreground as I write - newsprint landscape full of organic structures.

Tis been quite some time since I posted last, but I figured I should post something due to all the festivities. Well, new mane to begin. Highlights: awesome pencil crayons from my local heard, Flora purfume ( Chris Cunningham, genius) and a ring from 1955 - Sittari. Now I did some research on the brand and maybe I am just completly living under a moist wax paper sheet but the company has been kicking around since 1941. Also, they are one of Canada's leading jewelery manufacturers - who knew? ( well, probably everyone except my self). Browsing around the site I have found true love among the slides. Notice, I have not brought up my other presents such as a vegetable washer complete with a knife set and scrubber.

I listen to the beat, streaming down my eyelet gaze.Tonight I felt a flutter, then two... then none and all blanked white. Movement stalled, reflection startled and red blood swirls within the inconsistent mind of the fallen. Wrap me up in blankets of my never ending disagreement with soul interest and duty. Can you take me somewhere without lined meaning within quite secular speech?

I went and watched the musical RENT which some of my friends were in. Overall, great performance and set design. The actor who played Angle was absolutely beautiful - the best cross dresser I have ever seen. I walk a lot and pounder about where I am right now, what I should be doing and how I should be doing it. My art is progressively reaching this ultimate feeling in which I can almost grasp.

Ta-da! My art assignment is done. After two grueling hours it is complete. I wish I started this earlier because it was actually enjoyable. Simple: draw something from a magazine. Thanks to yee ol'contrast, my bottom was saved. Clearly, this picture is not from a magazine, more so the pages in my mind. Enjoy! Post script, my essays are all done and I am so ready for sleep.

Above: Assignment. I used pastel, marker and pencil crayon. Interesting discovery; if you put marker on top of the pastel it creates an extreme opaque colour. Can you see the image? It is a woman, sitting down, revealing a love seat and arm chair under her dress.

Hilroy Collection

Since I have not a dedicated period of art except Drawing 100, I decided to slowly start a series of pieces called : The Hilroy Collection. Yes, very cleaver. Basically I will be drawing on my note books; a spin off of the distraction sketches previously posted on here. Today is AMAZING. The sun is shining, it is warm, and I actually slept. This is my mood today. I sit here, staring ot to a bright, yellow land scape. However, I am trapped within my own choice of academic pulls. Is it possible to lose your self sometimes? To feel that you have embodied a sacrifice of current self? Stress may be a factor to unmotivated energy.I think I wave at Nicole from a dome containing a blank wall of sudden confusion and destroyed devotion.

One day in class we had to sketch Shakespeare's bust...with pumpkins (of course there are pumpkins!). So, I used two styles of art - one realistic and the other organic. My teacher asked why I used a more realistic approach rather than my " own" style, which is flow lines and circular arrangements. He proceeded to ask " who I was" and I thought to my self - " who am I?". I really attempted to get my style across in these two still lives ( one is books, the other ma face ). Today has not rained yet. That is nice.

O dear, I really must learn to pay attention. All unconscious thought is translated with the form of lines and scratches. Today was raining, 80 people from my building have H1N1 and guess what? I think I may have it too. I have been saying to my self " its all psychological" but I am at the point of realization that...well...its not psychological! Tattoo designs...very simple sketches that I did during lecture today. The first one is for dear Anna, combining her love of dinosaurs ( note the dino egg ) with some sort of spiral design. On the bottom is for Rachel - something tribal. The basic shape is there, but I will add more detail and tattoo-ish shading to make it definite. Today is so lovely; the sun is shining and its hot!
